The City of Kigali sets to improve its mapping and urban mobility systems
On January 28th, 2025, the stakeholder seminar was held for presenting the results of the “Large-Scale Mapping and Urban Mobility Improvement project to Support Infrastructure and Services in Kigali”. The 3-year project was funded by Jica Rwanda and it is a collaborative effort between partners’ institutions including National Land Authority, Ministry of Infrastructure, Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) and the City of Kigali. The seminar also aimed to foster awareness among stakeholders about the available resources and tools.
In her opening remarks at the seminar, Madam Nishimwe M. Grace, Director General of the National Land Authority, highlighted that this ended project has already made, and will continue to make, significant improvements to urban mobility, advancing infrastructure development, and supporting the sustainable growth of the City of Kigali. “the project will significantly improve urban mobility, enhance infrastructure development, and contribute to the overall sustainable growth of Kigali City. We believe they will have a lasting positive impact on the city's ability to manage its growth, improve quality of life, and enhance service delivery to its citizens.
The project has yielded several significant outputs including
Topographic Maps: These high-resolution maps provide a comprehensive and accurate representation of the City of Kigali, enabling better urban planning and infrastructure development.
Topomaps Geoportal: This online platform provides easy access to the digital maps and other spatial data, empowering stakeholders with valuable information.
3D City Model: offers a virtual representation of the city, better visualization & analysis for urban planning & development
Kigali Road Asset Management System (K-RAMS): This pilot system, implemented along a 100km road network, provides a web-based platform for efficient road management, maintenance and planning.
During the seminar, many speakers emphasized the crucial importance of the "Project for Large-Scale Mapping & Urban Mobility Improvement in Kigali. They highlighted how the project plays a key role in enhancing the city's infrastructure, improving urban mobility and supporting sustainable development. The discussions focused on the project's potential to drive long-term growth, facilitate better planning and decision-making, and improve the quality of life for Kigali's residents. The speakers also pointed out the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the project's success and its lasting impact on the city's future.
Stakeholders were encouraged to utilize the topographic map and other available resources for more effective planning. It is valuable across various domains, and its accuracy provides reliable data that can offer insights from different perspectives.
The Final Seminar of the "Project for Large-Scale Mapping & Urban Mobility Improvement in Kigali" was attended by key stakeholders, including Minako Shiotsuka, Chief Representative of JICA in Rwanda, the Director General of the Rwanda Housing Authority and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
