RWANDA TO USE GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION AND STANDARD SATELLITE IMAGERIES

On March 26, 2019, The Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Digital Globe ell host a one day senior level workshop on Geospatial Information and Satellite Imagery.

This workshop will focus on how satellite imageries can be used to plan and monitor various government initiatives and to make better and evidence-based decisions in various domains such as land use monitoring, dealing with deforestation and encroachment to agriculture land, soil protection, population settlement development, infrastructure planning, urbanization, global warming, climate change and others.

In her remarks, during the opening of the workshop, the Director General of Rwanda Land Management and Use Authority, Mrs Espérance Mukamana said that the use of satellite imageries will help in decision making in different area. She said “It has been proven that high resolution satellites imageries and spatial information can empower government to make better evidences-based decisions, be more effective in their operations and ultimately provide greater societal benefits”.

A part from the main focus of the workshop, it had also objectives of raising awareness of importance of the use of spatial information and satellite imagery, to get relevant information on requirements for satellites acquisition and basically to identify ongoing and planned/potential projects within government institutions and ministries where satellite imageries can be applied in order to reduce prices and avoid duplication of imageries.
